The funny thing is that I just don’t buy many of these as that “weird.” Not Moxy Crimefighter weird, at least.
As you know, the distribution of new names is flattening out so that the top ten names no longer constitute a significant number of the “namespace.” Some of the names listed above are not “trendy” but (from a family that has both a Euripides and Socrates, as well as a Belchen and Jolly), there are more names out there than the cast of Friends, and no law saying that celebrities have to limit themselves any more than the rest of us.
So, yes, there are some creative choices here. But many of them are fairly traditional names. In fact, one of them would have been our kid’s name had she been a girl, and one of them is very similar to our runner-up for a girl’s name.
Also, having just spend the last few days in a maternity ward, I’m convinced that hoi polloi have equally odd naming conventions.

Sad to report I got 100%. I’m not sure how that happened, considering that I don’t watch TV.

Alex H.– do tell which one would have been your kid’s name had she been a girl!
Euripides, Socrates, Belchen and Jolly are certainly unusual. Funny how opinions of “weird” differ.
